How it works

1

Keep a good thing

“Great ramen today” counts. Write it down, and it becomes an egg.

2

On a sad day

The capsule machine brings back a good memory you kept. “I forgot about that day.”

3

Do it again

Each time, your egg grows. Anything that feels the same counts too.

4

Hatch a critter

Who's inside? You won't know until it hatches.

Why it works this way

Good moods are often made

When a good memory comes back, Shelly asks: want to find another moment that feels like this? The idea is borrowed from behavioral activation in psychology: do things that bring you joy instead of waiting to feel better first.

Behavioral activation: Martell, Addis & Jacobson, 2001

On a sad day, your own good days come back

One study found that recalling happy memories under stress softened the body's stress response. So the capsule machine holds no quotes from strangers, only days you wrote down yourself.

Speer & Delgado, 2017, Nature Human Behaviour

Good memories add up

Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson suggests that good feelings, over time, build into resources for hard times. So what Memory Egg cares about most is each new good memory you make.

Broaden-and-build theory: Fredrickson, 2001, American Psychologist

Sadness has its place too

The sad things you write are tucked away at first. A month later, Shelly looks back at that day with you, along with the good memories you've made since. You get to see how you got through it.

FAQ

Do I need a subscription?

No. Writing, the capsule machine, hatching, your yard, and Relax Together all work without one. Memory Egg Plus adds a seasonal critter every season, seasonal toys, a new toy every month, and the Candy Capsule theme.

Will I keep seeing the sad things I write?

No. Sad memories are tucked away on the Memories page. They only open if you tap them.

Is this therapy?

No. Memory Egg can't replace professional help. If you've been feeling bad for a while, talk to someone you trust, or reach out to a local mental health service.

Is there an Android or iPad version?

Right now it's iPhone only.

Next time you're sad, a good memory will be waiting for you.
